The celebration of Mother's Day
Mother's Day is a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. The celebration of Mother's Day began in the United States in the early 20th century; it is not related to the many celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have occurred throughout the world over thousands of years, such as the Greek cult to Cybele, the Roman festival of Hilaria, or the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration (originally a celebration of the mother church, not motherhood).
Soon it's Mother's Day, that day of the year when I am reminded of the joys of motherhood, and I give an inner shout-out of thanks to my own mother.
In my work teaching older adults, I listen to their issues, guide them in living healthier lives, and build their confidence to keep them moving strong. I feel I have an honored role. Together we sort out what matters most in their lives, and find solutions to help them live full, enriched, independent lives. In return, I receive their joy and wisdom.
Legal Awareness for Women
Objectives of the Workshop:

confidence ensuring independent thinking, expressing concerns of the community,
communicate their views, perceptions, priorities and equally participate in the
development of their communities.
Lets ask ourselves just one question, How many women, victims of any form of abuse, be it sexual, physical, emotional or any other, actually have the courage to go and report the same.? We need not google the statistics. It is staring at us naked in our face, the obvious answer: - hardly a minuscule percentage. So, what is that we lack at stops us from doing so, legal provisions, laws, judicial system, police force? No, nothing, all of it is very much present in our country.
If only women and men were made aware that laws exist to protect women and that they will be implemented and without ANY influence, will serve as a double edged sword, EMPOWERING WOMEN and SCARING MEN. Publicity of such a provision will deter those conniving men from thinking about taking advantage of any woman.
So we propose the following provisions to be included in a new Act, Women Legal Awareness Act,-
1. Compulsory Legal awareness session to be held in EVERY school/college/institute/workplace having women. Such a session will tell the women about thee type of harassment and what to do in such events, whom to approach. The helplines available, the important phone numbers, the contact details of the local Womens Commission, etc. Such a session will reach out to women, not only making them aware of the types of harassments, but also in giving them confidence that there are laws to protect them and resources are available.
2. Making ANY complaint by women (falling in line of any form of harassment) a compulsory FIR and the details of the accused (parents details and job details) to be recorded. This move will deter men from daring to exploit women.
3. Speedier trials of such complaint by local courts.
4. Having a lady police officer look into the complaint.
5. Having a police helpline for such matters.
6. Compulsory putting of posters carrying helpline number, website addresses, contact details, in every place having women (e.g.: - in ladies restrooms).This will server as a constant reminder to women that help is just around the corner.
Reservations in educational institutions
Right to free and compulsory education to all children of the age of six to fourteen year is itself a fundamental right and the State is also empowered to make special provisions of reservation for admission to educational institutions, including private non-minority educational institutions, whether aided or unaided.
Reservation in public employments
Economic upliftment comes essentially through guaranteeing an adequate share of participation and selection, with relaxation in criteria especially as regards age, educational qualification are important objectives realized through reservations. Significantly, it shall not be merely at the entry level into public employment but also in matters of promotion with consequential seniority to any class or classes of posts, which in the opinion of the State are not adequately represented. Unfilled vacancies in a year which are reserved for being filled up in that year may be filled by in any succeeding year or years without clubbing with the vacancies of the year in which they are being filled up.
Who are persons with disability?
The definition of the term disability as per the provisions of the Persons with Disability Act 1995 means:-

Features of the 1995 Act
The 1995 Act provides for placing mechanisms for prevention and early detection of persons with disabilities. Provisions for education and employment are the most potent tools for their empowerment and the Act addresses the agenda for establishment of special schools and reservation in public employments. The Act declares that the Government shall appoint in every establishment such percentage of vacancies not less than three per cent for persons or class of persons with disability of which one per cent each shall be reserved for persons suffering from blindness or low vision; hearing impairment; locomotor disability or cerebral palsy, in the posts identified for each disability. Where in any recruitment year any vacancy cannot be filled up due to non-availability of a suitable person with disability or, for any other sufficient reason, such vacancy shall be carried forward in the succeeding recruitment year and if in the succeeding recruitment year also suitable person with disability is not available, it may first be filled by interchange among the three categories and only when there is no person with disability available for the post in that year, the employer shall fill up the vacancy by appointment of a person, other than a person with disability. All Government educational institutions and other educational institutions receiving aid from the Government shall reserve not less than three per cent seats for persons with disabilities. The appropriate Governments and local authorities shall reserve not less than three per cent in all poverty alleviation schemes for the benefit of persons with disabilities.
It is a healthy development to see that with increasing awareness of law among women, the legal battles are also increasing, said Karnataka State Human Rights Commission legal advisor Ramadevi.

RAINWATER HARVESTING
Rainwater harvesting is the process of collecting, filtering and storing water from roof tops, paved and unpaved areas for multiple uses. The harvested water can also be used for potable purposes after testing and treatment. The surplus water after usage can be used for recharging ground water aquifer through artificial recharge techniques. This can also result in improving the quality of the ground water e.g. lower fluoride content in ground water. Rainwater harvesting mechanisms are designed after assessing the site conditions such as incident rainfall, subsurface strata and their storage characteristics, infiltration test and by building suitable structures to collect and store rainwater.
Rainwater harvesting system provides a source of soft, high quality water, reduce dependence on wells and other sources, and, in many contexts, are cost effective. Rainwater harvesting system can range in size from a simple PVC tank to a contractor designed and built sump – costing thousand of rupees. Rainwater system are inherently simple in form. Harvesting rainwater is not only water conserving, it is also energy saving since the energy input required to operate a centralized water system can be bypassed.
A range of filters for different filtration rates have also been designed using different filter media.

Rainwater Harvesting in Different type of Buildings :
Normally,debris, dirt and dust get deposited on the roof during non-rainy periods.When the first rains arrive, this unwanted material will be washed into the storage tank. This may cause contamination of water collected in the storage tank thereby rendering it unfit for drinking and cooking purposes. Therefore, a first flush system can be incorporated in the Roof top Rainwater Harvesting Systems (RRHS) to dispose of the first flush so that it does not enter the tank. There are two such simple systems. One is based on a simple manually operated arrangement whereby, the down pipe is moved away from the tank inlet and replaced again once the first flush water has been disposed. In another simple and semi automatic system, separate vertical pipe is fixed to the down pipe with a valve provided below the T junction. After the first rain is washed out through the first flush pipe the valve is closed to allow the water to enter the down pipe and reach the storage tank.
Rainwater Harvesting Basic Components
Rainwater systems come in all shapes and sizes, from simple catchment system under a downspout to large above and/or underground cisterns with complex filtration systems that can store thousands of gallons of water. Most rainwater collection systems are comprised of the following basic components:
Catchment surface - rooftop or other raised solid surface. The best catchment systems have hard, smooth surfaces such as metal roofs or concrete areas. The amount of water harvested depends on the quantity of rainfall, and the size of the surface and the slope of the catchment area.
Gutters and downspouts - also known as distribution systems that channel the water from the catchment area to a holding container such as a barrel, cistern, planted area, etc.
Leaf screens - a screen that removes or catches debris.
Roof washers - a device that diverts the "first flush" of rain before it enters the storage tank. Most rainwater suppliers recommend that the "first flush" of water is diverted to an outside area of the storage system, since the catchment surface may accumulate bird droppings, debris and other pollution.
Storage tanks - In general, the storage tank is the most expensive component of a rainwater harvesting system. There are numerous types and styles of storage tanks available. Storage can be above-ground or underground. Storage containers can be made from galvanized steel, wood, concrete, clay, plastic, fiberglass, polyethylene, masonry, etc. Examples of above-ground storage include; cisterns, barrels, tanks, garbage cans, above ground swimming pools, etc. Storage tank prices vary based on different variables such as size, material and complexity. To inhibit the growth of algae, storage tanks should be opaque and preferably placed away from direct sunlight. The tanks should also be placed close to the areas of use and supply line to reduce the distance over which the water is delivered. Also consider placing the storage at an elevated area to take advantage of gravity flow. The tank should always be placed on a stable and level area to prevent it from leaning and possibly collapsing.
Delivery systems - gravity-fed or pumped to the landscape or other end use areas.
Purification/treatment system - needed for potable systems to make the water safe for human consumption. Please check with your local health department for information on filtration systems and certification requirements.

Career Highway - our career guidance workshops for students, uses the 3 Test Model (Personality, Potential & Professions) of career guidance focusing on career guidance through:

Generally conducted over 2 days,
the first day consists of a series of aptitude and psychometric tests which are then scored and measured to match against a bank of around various contemporary careers.
Day 2 sees participants coached through their assessment results and counselled on the implications of the assessment, and guided to suitable options based on their competitive potential, aptitudes and interests.
As a result, each participating student is able to identify career options most suitable for him/her; wherein he/she has high chances of success.
The workshop process has been developed with extensive research, and is structured in the form of a workbook, which is distributed to students and remains with them for continuing reference.
The range of careers covered includes:
- Careers suitable for high, average and low performers
- Vocational careers requiring 3-6 months of training as well as higher education linked careers needing up to 10 or more years of education
